Chapter 19

Thea reached in her pocket for the cash she’d stashed there to tip the taxi driver. Once again, Tilly herself had shown up. The driver turned around in her seat. “Do you want me to wait?” She’d parked in front of the grand skyscraper that Saxon called home when she wasn’t living in an indoor tent. It was one of the tallest buildings in the city. It even had a doorman who stood ready outside the taxi’s door waiting for her.

“No thanks.” Thea held out the tip, but Tilly shook it off.

“It’s taken care of. Need another card?” She held one out.

Thea declined. As an entrepreneur, she knew business cards spelled with calling card spells weren’t cheap. She made it a practice to keep track of them.

“Good evening, Ms. Redding.” The building’s doorman offered his gloved hand to help her out. Marcus must have told him she was coming. She paused at his hand, but it seemed rude not to take it.

As she strode over the plush and perfect red carpet that led to the golden front doors, Marcus paced forth. He’d been waiting in the shadows, his powerful strength masked in his stillness. She stopped, as if waiting to be caught, as if she could manage this game with him. He tempted…his handsome face, his focus, the promise of his touch.

She battled between the thrill and the danger.

He eyed their surroundings as if something might steal her away. A sense of safety, however false, wrapped around her…the thrill was winning. It tingled through her, an echo of the kiss that hadn’t happened last night.

“You’re lurking like a dragon that plans to sneak away jewels and treasure from the residents,” she said.

“Moral riders would never steal another’s treasure.” He looked her over. “Where’s Bob?”

“I gave him the night off. I figured between you and Tilly I’d be safe enough. You’ll be pleased to know he came to work with me today and sat on the counter.”

“I’d be more pleased if he was still with you.” He tilted his head. “You dressed up.”

“Successful shopkeeper chic.” The navy pants and blue sweater had been paired in the consignment shop along with the jaunty orange and navy scarf knotted around her neck. They’d all had their original tags on them. She’d been saving the outfit for some future event that had yet to show up. Now they’d be tainted with Saxon’s vibes, but Thea wanted to give blending in her best shot in hopes that Smart Bastard would be less likely to notice her here.

It always felt like he was watching.

Another doorman opened the front doors with a push of vibes, nodding to them as they passed.

The lobby glistened and sparkled with marble, gold, and polished wood. Its ceiling stretched high and the conversations of the surprisingly large number of people milling about bounced around the fancy surfaces.

Some of them nodded to Marcus. A few greeted him by name. They all looked her over. But she forgot them when Marcus’s hand touched her lower back.
